Leah Baughman "I came to Wheeling Jesuit unsure of what exactly I wanted to do with my life after graduation. I chose to major in Communication because it provided broad possibilities of creativity and opportunity in a variety of careers. My favorite classes during my college career were Advertising and Media and Culture because I enjoy the creative side of the Advertising business and think it is very important to study the effects and influence the media has on our society. Because of these classes, and numerous others, I have developed skills in public speaking, professional writing, advertising, and public relations, just to name a few. During my junior year, I was inducted into the Communication honor society, Lambda Pi Eta, and was made Vice President for my senior year. My most beneficial project throughout college was the creation and maintenance of the Communication Department website because it allowed me to utilize the skills I have acquired during my time at Wheeling Jesuit. I am also a captain on the WJU Women's golf team and run the social media associated with the team.
For my Senior research project, I wanted to focus on the topic of advertising and chose to study the effectiveness of Coca-Cola ads and the strategy behind this success. My research was accepted by the Eastern Communication Association to be presented at their 2018 convention in Pittsburgh, PA. " |

David Corral "I applied to Wheeling Jesuit with the hopes of studying psychology. Everything in me wanted to study the mind, study its intricacies and the process behind each individual thought. I was infatuated by the study of the human mind. As freshman year had rolled along, the more and more I would realize I did not appreciate psychology. I was so bored and uninterested in the subject, attending class started to feel like an obligation. I had a problem with this and decided to change my major to Communications, and I have not looked back since.
Communications allows the world and relationships to be seen through many different eyes. Communications permits and encourages creativity within such a poorly documented world. My time being a communications major has been spent writing many papers, something I enjoy doing. One of my favorite papers I ever wrote was an analysis on the Stereotyping of African American men in Boyz N the hood. I mentioned the movies perpetuation of stereotypes, as well as the stereotypes challenged by the movie. Photography was also one of my favorite courses, where I found my love for documenting through a lens. Photography gave me an introduction to editing pictures, taught me how to be patient, as well as made me appreciate what was around me. Capturing moments as an observer can be moving, as much as it can be entertaining" |
Colton Claytor "My name is Colton Claytor and I am 22 years old. I have attended Wheeling Jesuit University since the fall of 2014 and will finish in the spring of 2018. Throughout my time at WJU I have learned many skill sets that will help me in my future career. Some of these skills include photography, interviewing, writing and proofreading. Perfecting these skills are important because I am a communications major with a concentration in marketing.
I was really able to practice these skills during my internship in the admissions office at WJU. Everyday I was writing articles and proofreading many different papers. When it can to interviewing I was able to leave the office and talk to different faculty and students to get more information. Finally, I did another internship where I had to take a lot of action photographs for the swimming page at WJU. All of this field work really helped me to hone in on these skills and improve them." |

Nick Csenar "In my 4 years at WJU I have learned many things in the communication field. All very applicable to what I want to do in my life, I learned a lot about enculturation and different cultures around the world and how to study them. I am now very good at public speaking and giving speeches, but a big part of my career at WJU is learning the ins and outs of media such as a camera and the different programs on the computer for editing pictures. I really enjoyed doing numerous photography projects and creating different backgrounds and photos in photoshop. I learned how to use a camera very well and took many photos here on campus. I was able to get an internship with the Men’s Basketball team to just live stream their games, this taught me a lot about how to do a live stream, how the film looks when you are filming a quick game, what it takes to film a sporting event. I also was able to do many different videos and highlights for my lacrosse team in the fall and spring which was very helpful in being able to have the knowledge for when I can make videos in the future.
All these skills that I have learned in communication are very applicable to my life, I enjoy taking photos of wildlife and nature when I am out hunting and with this knowledge in how to film, make videos, create pictures I am going to be able to create a hobby out of making hunting/nature videos. Also the skills I have learned from my different classes on public speaking, and enculturation will help me communicate with others and be able to learn from others in the military." |
Cassandra Holstein "At my time at Wheeling Jesuit University, I have taken many lessons that will help me succeed in the future. I originally chose communications as my major because of the diversity in career choices after I graduate—there are many different options to take with this degree. At WJU, I have been able to network and gain experience through internships, softball, and service. I was able to work with a former professor who connected me with an internship for a business out of Los Angeles. Through service and an internship, I am learning to work with a non-profit organization. I have gained many skills such as public speaking, advertising, editing/writing efficiently, marketing, and reporting among some of them. Many of these skills apply to many different careers, meaning each will help no matter what job I get once graduated. This program also gave me the opportunity the pick up a minor to put myself ahead in the business side of communications, too. My time spent here has led to being the president of Lambda Pi Eta, the communications honor society and has allowed me partake in research, the Eastern Communication Conference, and Research Symposium which all help further my experience in preparation for the future. The professors are here for students to learn, succeed, and prepare students for life after college. I feel that is exactly what I did in the communications department at Wheeling Jesuit University."

Cody Matthews "My name is Cody Matthews. I am 21 years old from Edmonton, Canada. I am a Communications major with focuses in Professional Communications and Media Studies. My interests after graduation are in the marketing field. My original interest for marketing comes from my Dad, Dave. He works within marketing for Eaton Electrical. Growing up, sports played a huge role in my life; everything has always revolved around Hockey and Lacrosse. That is how I came to WJU, Lacrosse allowed me a path to further my education. With my love of these sports I originally looked at becoming a sports writer, this is still something I am interested in and still might peruse in my future. Post graduation I look to travel with Castle Downs Recreation Society International, a group that my parents are founding members of, and bring playgrounds to the children of third world countries.
At WJU I have learned a lot, and I am thankful for this. Truly one of the things that has flourished the most is my writing skills. The instruction I have had from the numerous professors here has truly made me a better writer. This is a skill that will be very valuable in the future in my career path. Another important skill I’ve learned here at WJU is the Adobe Suite. Having skills in this editing system will help me out greatly in finding jobs in the future. My favorite class I have taken at WJU is Demagoguery. This is the study of why people hate and how we use it. This opened my eyes a little more to the world around us and allowed my to understand speech even more, another very valuable skill for a Communications major." |
Here is a link to the work I did at my summer internship with international energy company BP. I wrote my own speech and was a keynote speaker at one of programs in which I lead.

Yafeu Rougier "My experience in college, particularly in the Communications program, has allowed me to gain more knowledge about a variety of theories, concepts and phenomena in Communication. Had I not decided to enroll in this program, I would never have known about theories like the Communication Accommodation Theory as well as concepts like cultural relativism and media ideology. I have also learned more about constructing formal and informal research papers using a variety of research methods like textual analysis, interviews and ethnography. Also, constructing these research papers has given me insight into scholarship about the media and its various products.
Not only is this knowledge interesting to learn, but having these tools has helped me to be more versatile as a writer and speaker thus improving my future career. In the summer of 2017, I was able to secure a summer internship at international energy company BPTT. Here I held the position of Corporate Responsibility intern. It was here I utilized my skills learnt especially during consultations and meetings as well as constructing communications plans. I also was chosen as a resident assistant to first year students at Wheeling Jesuit University. The skills learned in the Communications program have been an asset which has allowed me to succeed in this leadership role. Furthermore, I have also written two extensive research papers utilizing textual analysis to analyze ideology found in the media. Both have been accepted to be presented at the James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference in April 2018." |

Xavier Sanchez "I have learned many things in relations with how to utilize my communications skills during my college campaign. I learned to use skills such as advertising and public speaking. I honed in my on my advertising skills by creating a website that helps advertise a charity dinner that all proceeds go to the children’s hospital organizations. This alone taught me how to use social media platforms to show what event I am talking about and spread awareness of it for all others around the country. Advertising is a key concept that will prove to be crucial down the road in really any job I might come across.
Without learning public speaking skills from my communication major I would not have the proper teachings to be able to stand in front of an audience and speak on topics such as research papers I have wrote throughout the last four years. Public speaking has given me an advantage going into the communications work force because a large percent of the world is deathly afraid of public speaking. The courses I’ve been learning about it in my major has allowed me to be able to present without being nervous as well as be punctual and a great presenter in classes and teaching environments." |
